Addressing Food Insecurity
That Pop-up Restaurant
School is out for the summer, and for many children that means lazy days at the pool, fun with friends, and family road trips. It also means that many children within the community have lost the guarantee of a nutritious meal. That Pop-up Restaurant is an innovative social program that offers free meals to all Chase County residents between the ages of 1-18. While there are specific criteria that a summer feeding program must meet, that doesn't mean the food has to be bland and boring. Dr. Matthew Shepherd of Social Innovation Laboratory had an idea to shake up the summer feeding program format by providing quality food options that taste good and are presented in an environment free of the social stigmas that are typically associated with summer feeding programs.
